Adult Basic Literacy Tutoring
Adult Basic Literacy tutors provide individualized instruction in basic reading and writing. Tutoring is conducted online, in libraries and churches, and at the Salvation Army Center of Hope in Birmingham.
Focused Volunteer
Engagement
TLC needs volunteers to meet a variety of needs: teaching digital literacy (computer basics, emailing, Microsoft Office programs, Google programs, accessing medical and banking portals, and using Zoom); tutoring in our Coaching a Better Reader program; representing TLC at nonprofit fairs; and other needs that may arise.
English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL)
ESOL is our fastest growing program. We offer classes for speakers of other languages that vary from beginner to advanced. Prospective volunteers interested in co-teaching ESOL classes do not need to be bilingual or have teaching experience. We teach ESOL learners online and in libraries, churches, and community centers.
