GED Referrals and Preparation Support in Central Alabama

Free help finding the right GED program and building the skills to get there.

What We Offer

A Referral and Preparation Partner

The Literacy Council is not a GED testing center. We help adults across Jefferson, Shelby, Walker, St. Clair, and Blount counties find the GED program that fits their schedule, location, and starting point.

If your reading, writing, or math needs work first, we teach those skills ourselves. Tutoring is free, one-on-one or in small groups, in person or online.

How to Get Started

Three Simple Steps

1. Reach Out: Call (205) 326-1925 or send us a message.

2. Talk It Through: We talk about where you are now and where you want to go.

3. Take the Next Step: If you are ready, we connect you with a GED program. If skills come first, we pair you with a tutor.

Building the Foundation First

Plenty of adults come to us after trying a GED class that moved too fast. Starting with foundational skills is not a step backward. It is often the reason it works the second time.

We also help English language learners prepare to take the test in English. There is no cost, no income requirement, and no judgment about where you start.

Why It Matters

A Diploma Opens Doors

In Alabama's Appalachian counties, which include all five counties we serve, 15 percent of adults have not finished high school or an equivalent. Statewide, the figure is 11.8 percent.

Getting a GED is less about the test and more about knowing where to start. That first step is the part we help with.
