Literacy Consulting and Advocacy Services

Training, program development, and speaking for organizations addressing low literacy.

What We Offer

Help Building Your Literacy Response

Churches, nonprofits, schools, and county agencies keep running into the same problem. The people they serve cannot read the materials, forms, or programs meant to help them.

We help you respond without starting from zero. We train your staff and volunteers in adult literacy instruction and help you build programming that fits your population, capacity, and funding. Our staff can also speak at conferences, board meetings, congregations, and community events.

How Programs Begin

Three Steps

1. Conversation: Tell us what you are trying to build and who you want to reach.

2. Honest Assessment: We tell you what is realistic and what it would take.

3. Training and Development: We train your team or help design your programming, so the capability stays with you.

The Experience Behind It

Decades of Literacy Leadership

Our staff brings decades of experience in literacy training, advocacy, ESOL, instructional design, digital literacy, workforce development, and nonprofit management. They present at conferences including ProLiteracy, Alabama-Mississippi TESOL, and Southeast TESOL.

Staff serves on statewide boards and councils, including the Alabama Literacy Alliance, Impact America, and an Alabama study group selected by Governor Kay Ivey to make literacy recommendations. TLC also leads the Literacy Providers Network, which meets quarterly, and with the Alabama Literacy Alliance, it supports three to four statewide literacy retreats a year.

Why Literacy

The Scale of the Need

In Alabama's Appalachian counties, nearly two out of three adults read at or below an eighth-grade level. More than one in four read below a third-grade level or cannot read at all.

No single organization can close that gap alone. Every church, agency, and nonprofit that builds literacy into its work widens the path for the people it already serves.

Service Area
