Thank you for considering becoming an adult basic literacy or ESOL tutor!

We require that you start by attending a FREE  volunteer orientation session prior to registering for training. This is your opportunity to learn more about our literacy programs and what will be expected of you as a tutor. This is also the time to ask any questions you may have.  See below for our 2020 Orientation ScheduleTo RSVP for a volunteer orientation session, please email Stephanie Lyas,

NOTE: All tutors must be 19 years of age or older.

Adult literacy and ESOL tutor training will take place on Saturdays. Classes are from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. with an hour and a half lunch break at noon. See below for our 2020 Training Schedule. All dates are subject to change.

Both the orientation and tutor trainings are held at The Literacy Council office, 2301 1st Avenue North, Suite 102, Birmingham, AL 35203. Parking for our downtown office is available along 1st Avenue North and 23rd Street North.

There is a $40 fee for adult basic literacy and ESOL tutor training. The cost covers tutor manuals and other printed materials. You may register for training at an orientation session or by clicking the training date you choose to pay via PayPal.
