Our Mission

Literacy for a Stronger Community

a group of people with a heart

The Literacy Council’s mission is to improve the lives of adults and their families through literacy education that teaches people to read, write, and speak English.

Literacy is more than reading. It is about opportunity. It is the foundation for securing a job, navigating daily tasks, and helping children succeed in school.

Our Story

A Legacy of Literacy in Alabama

In 1991, the United Way of Central Alabama, the Birmingham Chamber of Commerce, and the Junior League of Birmingham came together to address the urgent need for adult literacy education. Their vision led to the creation of The Literacy Council of Central Alabama.

Since then, The Literacy Council has helped thousands of adults gain the literacy skills they need to thrive. With 58 percent of adults in Central Alabama needing improved reading, writing, or language skills, the work remains critical.

For more than 30 years, we have seen firsthand how literacy impacts every part of life, from personal well-being to economic mobility and social justice.

Values That Shape Us

Respect and Inclusion

Our learners, staff, volunteers, and boards are as diverse as the work we do, so we strive to create an environment where everyone is respected, valued, and cared for regardless of race, gender, age, sexual orientation, religious beliefs, abilities, disabilities, or any other factor. We are dedicated to creating safe and welcoming work and learning spaces where everyone can flourish.

Human Flourishing

Central to our organizational values is human flourishing, the concept of helping others live fulfilling and meaningful lives to reach their full potential. Human flourishing is significantly enhanced when individuals from diverse backgrounds are treated fairly and feel fully included in an organization.

Human flourishing has its roots in Aristotle’s eudaimonia, which roughly means humans thrive when they are best able to realize their potential. The Sustainability and Health Initiative for NetPositive Enterprise at Harvard University identifies six domains of human flourishing, all consistent with TLC’s mission:

  • Happiness and Life Satisfaction
  • Mental and Physical Health
  • Meaning and Purpose
  • Close Social Relationships
  • Character and Virtue
  • Financial and Material Stability

Identity and Belonging

At the heart of these values are identity and belonging. We are all made of many identities, the things that make us who we are. Identity goes beyond just race or gender; it also includes class, education, religion, sexual orientation, language, physical and intellectual ability, age, and many other factors that contribute to personhood. We are committed to the essential worth of every person and providing inclusive spaces where they can safely flourish.

The People Behind the Mission

Our team is dedicated to creating a more literate Alabama. Every day, we work to ensure adults have access to life-changing literacy programs.
