In both Basic Literacy and ESOL tutor trainings I stress that buildinging vocabulary is essential to comprehension and language acquisition. I paraphrase Stephen Krashen: With lots of grammar and no vocabulary, students can say [or comprehend!] almost nothing; but with lots of vocabulary and no grammar, a student can say [comprehend] almost anything. We also talk about spelling and how “eccentric” spelling in English can be. Here is a terrific interactive website that will help learners with both spelling and vocabulary. While it is pitched to the K-12 group, it is not too childish for adult learners.
