The title of today’s blog post came to me in an article (link posted below) that I read at the Reading Horizons site. It was a strong reminder to me that as a tutor of adult learners I am teaching reading. I am not teaching what is being read! It is presumptuous of me to think my learners have no knowledge of the subject they are reading about on any given day. I am often in awe of the breadth and depth of the all-important “prior knowledge” that adult learners bring to their lessons every day. What learners need from us are the strategies good readers use every day to make the connection between what they already know and the words on the page.
